Andrea Mantegna, (1431-1506). Italian painter and engraver, Mantegna painted heroic figures, often using a dramatic perspective that gives the viewer the illusion of looking up from below. Son of a carpenter, Andrea Mantegna was born in Isola de Carturo, Padua in 1431. When Mantegna was 10 years old he was adopted by Francesco Squarcione, an art teacher in Padua. Mantegna worked for him and had the opportunity to meet very famous people there, like Donatello or Paolo Ucello. When Mantegna was very young he was in charge of painting frescos in the Capilla Ovetari. In 1451 Mantegna married the sister of Giovanni Bellini, then having good access to the other venecian artists. In 1460 Mantegna went to Mantua to paint in the Court of the Gonzaga
Royal family. |
