The Aztec art (Mexican art)Empire was
equaled in the New World only by the Empire of the Incas of Peru, and the
brilliance of their civilization is comparable to that of other great ancient
cultures of America and the Old World. From their legendary land of Aztlán,
the Aztecs came into contact with the highly developed Toltec civilization
located in central Mexico and the capital was "Tula". For internal
social- political reasons , and religious conflicts, a tremendous cultural
catastrophe happend, comparable to the fall of the Roman Empire. The city
of Tula was attacked and destroyed, occurred at the beginning of the 12th
century AD.

From the beginning of the 12th century to the beginning of the 13th, the
Aztecs had to search for a new place to settle, the Valley of Mexico, establishing
their centre first in Tenayuca and later in Texcoco. The Aztecs stabilization
of this new situation attracted immigrants from all parts of the disturbed
country, among them the Aztecs, who by then had established a precarious
home near the ruins of Tula. |

The Aztecs had three groups of artisans: metalworkers, stone workers,
and feather workers.
The metalworkers create exquisite jewelry, statues, and gold ornaments,
knives, needles, and fishhooks . This aztec artists used copper.
The stone workers made necklaces, nose plugs and gold lip plugs using
polished jade and other gems. Only the wealthiest nobles were allowed
to worn the plugs.
The feather workers designed, weaved, glued and tyed feathers onto cloth
backing to make shields, headdresses, fans, and other items. Using the
feathers from ducks or turkeys, but the more colorful ones came from tropical
birds, like parrot or macaw.
