Prior to 1917, artists in the village of Mstera created some of Russia's most exquisite icons. When the Communists banned icon painting, artists developed their now-famous craft of lacquer box art. After the collapse of the USSR, Mstera artists returned to their roots, generating beautiful religious works. Our paneled icon combines the ancient traditions of iconography with the 18-karat gold borders and other techniques common to Russian lacquer art.
