The members of the jury of the Salon, visitors to the exhibitions and
buyers demanded interesting factual content to paintings, or humorous
but factual pictures. Renoir, in his pictures, tells us little stories,
but usually of everyday life in Paris. The impressionists discovered the
individual value of the moment, giving expression to everything that is
in constant movement. Renoir made observations of the theatre and the
circus. |

Two years later, Renoir painted another box. A young girl went to the opera for the first time. In her face, you can see the anxious admiration captured in the posture and the facial expression. |

| Other entertainment for the Parisians, was excursions to the country in the summer. In the Baths, La Grenouillère, Renoir paid more attention to the colours and the light he was seeing than the individual forms of the scenes. "The Walk" and "The Swing" have a romantic air with a game between light and shadow. |

| The most important painting of that period of Renoir is Le
Moulin de la Galette, 1876. It is considered to be the most beautiful painting
of the 19th century. You get the impression looking at the painting that
Renoir had a close relationship with the figures of the painting. Indeed,
some of the models were his friends. The first impression is total disorder, but, the happiness and dancing of the people would be impossible to represent as a classical composition. The contrast between light and shadow is superb. Renoir created a new style of composition with a pyramidal group of three figures at the front, and a system of vertical and horizontal lines: people who dance, people standing up, the trees, the backs of chairs and the lamps. He put order in the painting using colours. The background is black with blue shine, contrasting with a bright lemon yellow. At the back to the left he uses blues and pinks. The whole painting has been touched with colours of sun and shadow. A real masterpiece. |
